Wan Video's terms are close to an outlier in this category: 1080p, up to 15 seconds, with audio, generated without a cap, for free. Set against Runway's 125 watermarked free credits and Synthesia having no free tier at all, nothing else lets you evaluate the category at zero cost.
As something to build on, it looks better than first impressions suggest. The model is released under Apache 2.0, which explicitly permits commercial use, and it is reachable by API through several providers such as OpenRouter and PiAPI — roughly $0.08–0.10 per second at 720p and $0.12–0.15 at 1080p. It can be wired into a pipeline much as Runway can, and per-second it is cheaper.
The catch is that access differs by host. Some let you try it free, but credit systems and commercial terms follow each host’s own rules, so "Wan is free" is not a claim that holds across the board. The model licence being Apache 2.0 and the terms of whatever service you reach it through are two separate layers. Documentation is also thinner in English than Runway’s, which slows you down when something does not work.
