Omi is the most build-it-yourself option in the category. Hardware and software are both open source, and transcription and summarisation can run on your own API key — GPT-4, Claude, Gemini, your choice. The device is around $89, with the developer-oriented DevKit 2 at $69.99.
Its headline used to be that no subscription was required; that is no longer quite true. Omi now has tiers of its own — free Basic at 300 listening minutes a month, Plus at 1,500, and an unlimited step above. That puts it close to the same 300-free-minutes shape as Plaud Note and ZENCHORD1, and unless you drive it with your own API key you cannot fully avoid a recurring charge.
It is English-first, with limited Japanese support, so ZENCHORD1 is the safer choice for Japanese meetings. Omi fits when three things are true together: you want to pick the model, you want to see where your data goes, and you want no subscription. If none of those apply, a more finished product gets you a result faster.
