Fiverr is built like Coconala: you buy a listed package, so there is no quoting round. The differences are scale and language — this is a global talent pool. It is not where you find Japanese-language specialists, but for work that assumes English (copy, design for overseas markets, voiceover) the range of candidates is in a different league.
The fee that catches people out is on the buyer side: a 5.5% service fee on the listed price, plus a $2.50 small-order fee on orders under $50. A $5 gig settles around $8, so buying many small gigs makes the surcharge significant. The low headline prices are headline prices — compare on what you actually pay or you will misread the gap to other platforms.
Quality varies widely at the cheap end. Filtering by seller level and review count makes it legible, but working from the lowest price tends to go badly. The interface is English-only, and so is the correspondence. If you need everything in Japanese, Coconala; if you need someone retained over time, Upwork's hourly contracts fit better.
