- The work is editing footage you already have. Delete text from the transcript and the video cuts with it, which makes trimming fast.
- You want filler removal and Overdub re-recording in the same place.
- It starts at $16/month on Hobbyist, against the $24/month paid entry on Riverside.
- An API and MCP mean you can drive editing from code or an AI assistant.
- Recording remote guests is the actual problem. Tracks are captured locally per participant, so a bad connection does not degrade the audio or video.
- You want 4K with separate tracks per participant.
- You want social clips pulled out of the recording automatically (AI Magic Clips).
Overview
Descript suits podcasters and solo video creators who think in sentences rather than waveforms: deleting a line in the transcript cuts the clip. An AI voice clone, made only after a recorded consent statement, can retype a misspoken word. The main limit for Japanese users is transcription: about 25 Latin-script languages are supported, Japanese is not, and filler-word detection works only in English. Plans are capped by monthly media hours and AI credits, so heavy editors should check those caps. An API and MCP server, still in early access, allow scripted edits.
Riverside suits podcasts and interviews where guests are in different places and the final file must not carry call-quality artefacts. Each participant is recorded locally, up to 4K video and uncompressed audio, and uploaded as a separate track, so a weak connection affects the live call more than the recording. Editing, Magic Clips, captions and AI show notes are built in. Plans are metered by recording hours and separate-track download hours, so frequent shows outgrow Pro quickly. The API is not self-serve; only selected Business accounts receive keys.
