The case for SILKYPIX is almost entirely about colour. It has a reputation for skin tones and natural landscapes, which is also why Panasonic and Fujifilm ship it as their bundled software. If you find Lightroom's rendering too neutral, or want to start from something close to the camera maker's own look, the starting point here is different.
It is a one-time purchase, with Pro12 listed at ¥25,300 including tax, against a subscription like Lightroom (the standalone 1TB plan is $14.99/month on annual billing) — on a monthly basis the crossover arrives around eighteen months. That is not the important part, though. The important part is that version upgrades are charged separately: support for newly released cameras does not arrive as a free update. If you change bodies often, treat compatibility and upgrade pricing as a running cost. Owners of Pro 9, 10 or 11 get one upgrade-priced purchase per licence. ISL’s own shop runs campaign pricing from time to time, so if the list price makes it a close call, check the current shop price before deciding.
The weaknesses are the interface and the learning curve. This does not feel like Lightroom or Luminar, and if RAW development itself is new to you there are a lot of places to get stuck. The other side of that is depth for anyone happy to work the parameters directly. A 30-day full-feature trial exists, so whether you can live with the interface is a question you can settle before paying — and should settle by actually using it.
