Adobe Lightroom is the industry-standard photo editing and RAW development application, offering powerful AI-assisted tools, seamless cloud sync, and a vast preset ecosystem.
Review
Choosing Lightroom is close to a default, and the only real reason to hesitate is the subscription. What being the industry standard actually buys you is not features but everything around them — presets, plugins, tutorials, and the sheer volume of searchable answers when something goes wrong. If your priority is not getting stuck, nothing else competes.
The current feature argument is AI masking and subject selection: sky, people and background selections happen automatically. That overlaps with AI-led tools like Luminar Neo, but Lightroom is built to place the selection automatically and then let you refine it by hand, which suits anyone who wants the final look to be their decision. Desktop, mobile and web sync is also genuinely unmatched if you shoot and edit in different places.
The one structural weakness is that there is no perpetual licence. After the March 2026 increase, standalone Lightroom with 1TB is $14.99/month on annual billing or $22.49 month-to-month, and the Photography Plan with Photoshop is $19.99/month. The amounts are light, but you have to accept that stopping payment means losing access. To own it instead, the alternatives are DxO PhotoLab, SILKYPIX (Pro12 lists at ¥25,300), Luminar Neo, or a Capture One perpetual licence — cheaper overall if you tend to stay on one version for years.
