Make
✓ Pros
  • Routers, iterators and aggregators let one scenario split, loop over and recombine data without code.
  • Per-module error handlers allow retry, skip or rollback paths inside the scenario.
  • Core plan at $9 a month includes 10,000 credits and unlimited active scenarios.
  • Public REST API lets you create and manage scenarios programmatically.
✗ Cons
  • About 3,000 apps, fewer than Zapier, so niche tools may need raw HTTP modules.
  • Credit usage depends on modules and data volume, which takes some practice to estimate.
  • Free plan allows only 2 active scenarios with a 15-minute minimum interval.
  • AI Agents and AI Web Search are still in beta.
Zapier
✓ Pros
  • App directory lists more than 10,000 apps, so niche SaaS tools are often already supported.
  • Free plan allows unlimited two-step Zaps, enough to test a simple trigger-action flow.
  • Copilot can draft a Zap from a plain-language description, with unlimited messages on paid plans.
  • Tables, Interfaces and Canvas let you keep data, forms and process maps in the same account.
✗ Cons
  • Per-task billing makes high-volume or looping workflows expensive compared with Make or n8n.
  • Free plan is limited to two-step Zaps and 100 tasks a month, so multi-step logic needs a paid plan.
  • No self-hosted edition; all data passes through Zapier's cloud.
  • Agents and Chatbots are metered separately from tasks, which complicates cost forecasting.

Our Verdict

Choose Make if…
  • Run volume is high: Core is $9/month for 10,000 credits, and the same volume on Zapier is an order of magnitude more expensive.
  • You need to transform data mid-flow — built-in functions cover branching, iteration and error handling.
  • You want to follow the flow as a diagram.
Choose Zapier if…
  • It comes down to whether your services are covered: over 9,000 apps, against more than 3,000 on Make.
  • This is your first automation. The visual builder is straightforward and costs you little learning time.
  • Run volume is low: 100 tasks/month free, or 750 tasks on Professional at $19.99/month billed annually.
Bottom Line: First check whether your services exist on Make: Zapier lists over 9,000 apps and Make more than 3,000, so if yours is missing, Zapier is the only option. If it is there, Make wins on cost as volume grows — $9/month for 10,000 credits on Core against $19.99/month for 750 tasks on Zapier Professional. Use run count as the threshold: a few hundred a month, take the Zapier simplicity; a few thousand or more, or any real data transformation in the middle, take Make. Both have free tiers, so build one real scenario before committing. Neither can be self-hosted — if your data cannot leave your infrastructure, look at n8n in the same category, whose Community Edition is free.

Overview

Make

Make fits users who have outgrown simple trigger-action flows and need branching, iterators, aggregators and explicit error handlers, while staying on a hosted service. Every paid tier from Core to Teams includes 10,000 credits a month, so the plans differ in features such as priority execution, file size and team roles rather than volume. The catalogue of 3,000+ apps is smaller than Zapier's, so check that your tools have native modules before committing. Make also offers Maia, an AI assistant for building scenarios, plus AI Agents and a web search module that are still labelled beta. There is no self-hosted edition.

Zapier

Zapier suits non-engineers who need to connect common SaaS tools quickly; its app directory is the largest in this category, so the integration you need usually already exists. The trade-off is cost: billing is per task, so high-volume or loop-heavy workflows get expensive fast. The free plan only allows two-step Zaps, so real use starts at Professional. AI features (Copilot for building Zaps, Agents, Chatbots, MCP access) sit on top of the core product, but Agents and Chatbots are billed separately from tasks. There is no self-hosted edition, which rules it out where data must stay on-premises.
